Family Beez

OUR STORY

This is a small family unit of organic honey production in Serifos, which chooses to use the concept of the family business as its brand name; Family Beez honey, and as in most agricultural stories in Greece, the grandfather was the one who laid the foundations of the production. The Rota family is the second generation of producers, who base their work on a 40-year tradition in the production and distribution of honey, continuing the work of their parents.

The Family Beez beehives are situated in a location of exceptional importance; Mavra Voladia and Mesa Akrotiri, situated in the southwest part of Serifos, where according to mythology Odysseus met Cyclops Polyphemus. Today, the area because of its geomorphological formations is an especially important natural habitat which is home to, among others, the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), and has been classified as «Natura 2000».

Serifos

IN BRIEF

Serifos is an island situated in the Aegean Sea and it belongs to the Cyclades. The capital of the island is the Chora (Serifos) and its main seaport is Livadi.

Even though it is considered a sterile land, gastronomically, it follows the tradition of Cyclades, with its main food products being the chickpea soup with rosemary, the pork louza (a kind of sausage), and its cheeses, which are usually made from goat milk. Another remarkable product is the multifloral honey with thyme, a type of honey made on the island that is quite aromatic, as it benefits from the micro-climate of the island that is characterized by dry winds and the saltiness of the sea.
